KANSAS CITY, MO., July 27, 2023 ― Saint Joseph Medical Center is pleased to announce the opening of a new Post Procedure Cardiac Observation Unit, a seven-bed unit that is currently open Monday through Friday. The unit provides patients expedited access to state-of-the-art cardiac procedural technology performed by expert cardiology providers.
“This unit specializes in the care of patients that have undergone a procedure such as a cardiac catheterization, pacemaker/defibrillator insertion, cardiac ablation or the WATCHMAN procedure,” says Associate Chief Nursing Officer Billie Leonard, DNP, MSN, RN. “This unit allows patients to receive individualized care from experienced cardiac nurses including overnight monitoring and a timely discharge within 24 hours.”
According to the National Library of Medicine, the use of observation units has increased in recent years, resulting in significant reductions in patient-related costs as well as hospital length of stay.
