Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine

Chronic wounds typically fall into several categories: pressure injuries, diabetic ulcers, venous leg ulcers and pressure ulcers, crush injuries, surgical wounds, and soft tissue and bone destruction from radiation therapy. Because successful wound treatment requires assessing the entire person, not just the wound, our team of experts work with the primary care physician to assure complete continuity of care. The team includes physicians, physician assistants and nurses with advanced training in the treatment of chronic wounds.

Hyperbaric Medicine
wound serv

We use many tools in wound treatment, including:

  • Specialized wound dressing
  • Vascular assessment
  • Debridement
  • Compression therapy
  • Prescription medication
  • Negative-pressure therapy
  • Bioengineered tissue grafting
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
  • Nutrition Assessment

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen treatments are designed to deliver up to 10 times the oxygen normally carried in the blood stream. This is done by breathing 100% oxygen at an increased pressure inside a “whole body” hyperbaric chamber. This significant systemic increase in oxygen, helps fight infections and stimulate the growth of small blood vessels in the wound bed to maximize the bodies healing potential.

Patients who have flown in commercial jets have experienced some of the change in pressure “sensations” which occur in a hyperbaric chamber. These generally occur in the ears and possibly the sinuses. Education is provided on hyperbaric procedures prior to the first treatment.

Treatments numbers vary depending on the indication. On average, 20- 40 treatments can be expected. These would be conducted daily, Monday through Friday in most cases. Each treatment last approximately 2 hours.

Not all patients will qualify for Hyperbaric treatments. Our Physicians will discuss and develop a plan for those patients who would qualify and derive the most benefit from these treatments.

We utilize 2, “state of the art” 36in. monoplace (One person chamber)chambers for our hospital based outpatient wound care.

Indications

We treat the following non-emergency indications related to wound care:

  1. Compromised Surgical Flaps and Split Thickness Skin Grafts (surgical incisions or grafts determined to be at risk by Surgeon or Physician)
  2. Diabetic Wounds- Wagner III or higher (Wagner is a scale used to determine the severity of a wound).
  3. Chronic Refractory Osteomyelitis (bone infection that has not responded to standard treatment)
  4. Soft Tissue Radionecrosis (injury to tissue from radiation therapy)
  5. Osteoradionecrosis (injury from radiation therapy to the bone)
  6. Acute Peripheral Arterial Insufficiency (sudden blockage to the extremities blood supply)
  7. Necrotizing Soft Tissue Injury (infection that causes rapid tissue death)
  8. Gas Gangrene (infection that kills muscle tissue)
  9. Acute Traumatic Ischemia (an injury caused by sudden loss of blood supply)
  10. Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss
