Spiritual Care

In keeping with our Catholic identity, St. Joseph Medical Center seeks to deliver compassionate healthcare in a manner that offers opportunities for patients, their family or hospital staff to experience the holiness of God!

The Spiritual Care Department welcomes you into our hospital. Our goal is to provide you with quality, holistic care which embraces the whole person: body, mind and spirit. We believe all human beings deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and compassion.

Our professional chaplains are Board Certified or Board Certification eligible and provide our best spiritual care to patients, their family and hospital staff of diverse backgrounds, and also reach out to persons who may not embrace a particular faith or organized religion.

Chaplains are available for prayer and encouragement before surgery; for assistance with arranging a visit from your priest, pastor, rabbi, or cleric; when feeling afraid or anxious; for assistance with an Advance Directive; for comfort when a patient is dying; and for additional spiritual or emotional needs. To have a chaplain paged, please dial “0” for the hospital operator or speak with a nurse.

A Roman Catholic priest makes rounds on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to offer the sacraments of Anointing of the Sick and Reconciliation. He is also available upon request to provide Commendation of the Dying. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion make regular rounds to provide the Eucharist to Catholic patients, their family members, and staff.

For emergency Spiritual Care support on Sundays and after 3:30pm (MON-SAT), patients and family members may contact their parish priest, minister, or a representative of their faith tradition.

At St. Joseph Medical Center, Catholic Mass is celebrated on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 1pm in the Chapel of St. Joseph, which is located on the main floor near the Heart Institute (Medical Office Building, C Entrance).

Catholic Mass is televised on closed-circuit TV in patient rooms on channel 67, and the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) is televised on channel 40. The Chapel of Saint Joseph is open 24/7 for quiet contemplation and prayer. All are welcome!
